At the moment, everything revolves around the tax return - the deadline is 31 May. Don't worry if you haven't filed your tax return yet. You are probably not affected. The deadline only applies to those who are obliged to file a tax return. Without an application, a deadline extension until 31 December of the following year is granted if you have your tax return prepared by a tax advisor or an income tax assistance association. All others who want to file a tax return voluntarily can theoretically take 4 years from the end of the tax year.
Classically, filing a tax return is synonymous with rolling around in files. Read here how you can avoid this with a digital filing system and still find your original documents at any time with the help of the fileeeBox.

For the tax return, you have to use the official forms and fill them out. This may sound like paperwork at first, but it is no longer necessarily the case. You can now also do most of your tax return digitally. This is possible, for example, with various tax return programmes in which the tax return is transmitted electronically via ELSTER to the responsible tax office. Afterwards, you only have to print out the compressed tax return and send it to the tax office. This step is omitted if you choose ELSTER transmission with digital signature.
If you do your income tax return via ELSTER, you can even do it free of charge. However, as a beginner in tax matters, you have to get to grips with it a bit. The paid tax return programmes provide more tips and information to help you find your way through the tax jungle. For example, I did my tax return with the online tool from smartsteuer. For each field on the form, there is a short, easy-to-understand explanation of what has to be entered in the corresponding field and where the information can be found. The tool also checks whether there are any discrepancies in the entries.
Regardless of whether you are obliged to file a tax return or do so voluntarily, whether you use a tax programme or not - in any case you must have a lot of documents ready. Not only to prove expenses, for example, but also to fill out the forms in the first place. Traditionally, this means taking out a file folder and leafing through it. Those who manage their documents digitally have a clear advantage here. With a full-text search, intelligent indexing, meta-information and sorting options, you can find your documents faster and with less stress. In addition, you have all your documents directly in one place and don't have to switch back and forth between different file folders and possibly other digital archiving locations. Read here how you can structure your digital documents for your tax return.
I can do my tax return completely digitally and only need digital or digitised documents to enter the required information and details. Normally, I do not have to submit any documents with my tax return. Official information from ELSTER states:
[...] when filing tax returns, receipts are often submitted that are not required by the tax office. [...]If expenses have been incurred due to special life circumstances, it is recommended to submit receipts together with your tax return. All other receipts are only to be submitted upon request by the tax office. This applies, for example, to receipts for work equipment, proof of contributions to professional associations and confirmations of insurance contributions. It is recommended that you keep all receipts to hand until the tax assessment has become final, so that the tax office can deal with any queries.
Against this background, filing all documents in a cumbersome and time-consuming manner in file folders just in case of need seems like an enormous and nonsensical additional expense. With my digital filing system, I am well prepared for the tax return. In order to still be able to find the originals at any time, we at fileee have developed the fileeeBox:
If the tax office requests an original document, the fileee app shows me in which box and at what level the document I am looking for is located. I don't have to spend time on time-consuming archiving of the originals and I can still find everything again. Otherwise, I do everything conveniently digitally.
