The topic of data protection runs through all areas: With the new single sign-on from Europe, you have a secure alternative to Apple and Google that allows you to retain control over your data. Find out what netID is and how it differs from other providers in our blog article.
netID is the login service of the European netID Foundation, a foundation established in 2018 by Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, ProSiebenSat.1 and United Internet (which also includes the GMX and WEB.DE brands). With SSO netID, it provides an open standard with which users can log in to partner portals. This offers a European alternative for services such as Apple, Google and others.
As a European initiative, netID is subject to stricter data protection regulations than American providers. The data is hosted in the EU and is subject to European data protection.
In addition, the European netID Foundation is committed to user-friendly transparency and makes it easy for users to view and manage their own settings and consents in the netID Privacy Center. This means that consent to the use of personal data can be managed transparently and in compliance with the GDPR and users always have an overview.
Creating a netID is free and relevant for all users who are looking for a more convenient alternative to password managers or a plethora of passwords. However, caution is also advised, as a centralized password for a large number of portals also makes it easier for hackers.
If you want to be on the safe side, we recommend that you activate two-factor authentication with netID to provide additional protection for your account.
Both private users and business users at fileee can use the SSO netID. A fileee login is currently still required for team accounts - however, we are already working on enabling SSO services such as netID here too.
GMX and WEB.DE users already automatically have a netID, namely the corresponding email address and password. As the GMX and WEB.DE login to fileee will expire in the next few months due to the introduction of netID (probably at the end of March 2024), you should link your account to your new netID or create a fileee login. You can find out how to do this in our help center.
