What documents do you really need to take with you on your trip?

Your backpack is already heavy enough, you're mostly digital anyway, you see no reason to lug around and waste a lot of unnecessary paper? There are many reasons to take your paperwork with you digitally rather than in the original. We've put together a list of travel documents you absolutely have to take with you and when a digital copy is worthwhile.

You need these documents as originals:

Passport, identity card and visa

You must always present your original passport or identity card (EU) when entering a foreign country and returning to Germany. The same applies if you have to prove your identity as a tourist abroad. Depending on the destination, foreign tourists may be required to have a visa. Information on your destination and which travel documents you need for the respective country can be obtained from the German Foreign Office.

Vaccination card

In case you have to prove a vaccination for entry or need a vaccination during your journey, you should carry the original with you. However, there is no general obligation to carry the original with you. However, a digital copy will help you if you need to prove your vaccination in hospital.

Driving licence and vehicle documents

In principle, you may only present your vehicle documents and driving licence as originals. However, in case of loss, a digital copy is very helpful. It facilitates communication with the authorities because they then have all the important information. However, you should report the loss of the original to the police immediately.

These documents are sufficient in digital form:

Tickets

Many airlines and Deutsche Bahn offer mobile tickets that you can download to your smartphone or tablet by e-mail, MMS or SMS. You should inform yourself in advance about the respective options and functions.

Booking confirmations, receipts

You can easily submit the booking confirmation for your flight and for your accommodation digitally. You can also save payment receipts, reservations and insurance policies for health insurance abroad online - and you should do so.

You should also save these documents online:

  • List of important telephone numbers and addresses (foreign health insurance, liability insurance, bank, telephone numbers for blocking credit cards)
  • A biometric passport photo (if you need to apply for a passport or driving licence replacement)

Our general advice is to make a digital copy of all important travel documents, e.g. with fileee. Then you are well prepared in case of loss. This is the only way to organisereplacement documents, e.g. identity papers, more quickly and easily.

Receive mail digitally

If you know in advance that you are expecting important mail during your holiday, there are various ways to receive it anyway and, above all, digitally. We have put the scanning services of E-Post and Dropscan through their paces. With both providers, however, you have to reckon with a certain lead time. It is therefore advisable to book the service a few weeks before your holiday. Once set up, however, you will receive your mail conveniently digitally. Take a look at our linking option with Dropscan.

Finding the way without the internet

Google Maps has become the all-purpose weapon when you're planning a route or don't know your way around a foreign city. If you don't want to book an international flat rate on holiday or if reception is poor, you can also download maps for your holiday destination and your excursions in advance.

Have fun on your next trip!
